Caledonian Society set to host eventful weekend

The Durban Caledonian Society will hold a Federation Chief’s Lunch at the Berea Bowling Club this Sunday, which will include a three-course meal, a Celtic singer and pipe band performance.

THE Durban Caledonian Society will hold a Federation Chief’s Lunch at the Berea Bowling Club in Umbilo this Sunday, July 9 at 11:30 for 12:00. Durban Caledonian Society chief Graeme Fuller says that the Federated Caledonian Societies of Southern Africa elect a chief each year from among eligible members who must have previously been chiefs of their own individual societies.

“The present federation chief is Tommy Soutar, a Scotsman born in Aberdeen, now living in Johannesburg, and he will be making an official visit by invitation to the Durban Caledonian Society, accompanied by his son, Mark. Federation chiefs normally visit each active society during their term of office,” he said.

Fuller says that the Durban Caledonian Society have taken the opportunity to combine the official visit with the annual KwaZulu-Natal Scottish Gathering. “The visit will commence with a welcoming reception at the Durban Club on Victoria Embankment, on the evening of Friday, July 7 at 16:30. The Piobaireachd Competition (pronounced pea-broch), forming part of the KZN Scottish Gathering, will be held, and there will be a finger supper. Piobaireachd is the classical music of the Highland bagpipes. Each tune lasts ten minutes or more, and it requires great skill, concentration and stamina to play. This event is open to the public at a cost of R40 per person,” said Fuller.

Fuller says that on Saturday, July 8, the main part of the KZN Scottish Gathering will take place at Maritzburg College. “Individual piping and drumming will begin at 10:00, and the pipe band competitions will be at 14:00, followed by massed bands at 15:30,” he said.

On Sunday, July 9, the official Durban Caledonian Society lunch for the visiting chief will be held at the Berea Bowling Club in Ferguson Road, from 11:30. “The cost of entry for the Federation Chief’s Lunch is R80. This will include a three-course meal. Entertainment will be provided by the Durban Caledonian Society Pipe Band, and Lesley Starke will sing. The federation chief will deliver a speech to our society.  Members of the public are welcome, but please book with Molly Gould on 067 269 9442,” concluded Fuller.
