SAPS seize counterfeits worth R400m at Durban Harbour

Tons of counterfeit items of well-known clothing brands was recovered after SAPS spotted a suspicious shipping container.

SAPS recovered counterfeit goods worth approximately R400m after identifying a vessel at Durban Harbour in the early hours of Wednesday, May 10.

SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the vessel was flagged at the harbor and then searched in Isipingo.

“Officers were performing their routine risk profiling when they identified a cold-storage container whose details looked suspicious. The container was searched at a depot in Isipingo, and tons of counterfeit items of well-known clothing brands, worth approximately R400 million, were recovered,” said Netshiunda.

SAPS is working to identify exactly where the container came from.

“The container was coming from an Asian country, and the police have already started with the process of establishing the intended destination and the possible recipients,” concluded Netshiunda.
