Vincent van Gogh cabaret comes to the Rhumbelow

Vincent, a multimedia cabaret, won a National Arts Festival Bronze Standard Bank Ovation Award in 2022. It tells of a complex man with a ruthless drive to create and a deep-seated desire to love and be loved.

NATIONAL touring theatre company, Wela Kapela, based in East London, will be presenting an innovative and highly acclaimed one-hander cabaret drama, Vincent, which considers the notional thought of Vincent van Gogh’s search for love, at the Rhumbelow Theatre from April 14 until April 16.

Vincent features performers Daniel Anderson (vocals) and Germaine Gamiet (piano). Anderson and Gamiet were recently seen in the equally acclaimed Mad about the Boys.

The show tells of the artist’s search for love, told through reimagined versions of popular musical theatre, pop, rock and jazz numbers.

This production continues the ongoing relationship between Wela Kapela and the Rhumbelow, bringing quality theatre from elsewhere in the country into the city of Durban.

Vincent is played by Daniel Anderson who is 22 years old and has grown up on the theatre stage. Starting as a child-Elvis Presley impersonator, he migrated to musical theatre in 2010. He holds a BA degree in Film Production and an ATCL in Musical Theatre with the Trinity College of London. Daniel also has two one-man cabarets on the show circuit – Mad about the Boys and Vincent.

He is accompanied by Germaine Gamiet who trained at the University of Cape Town’s South African College of Music, where he completed his musical performance degree under the guidance of Franklin Larey and Sandra Kettle. He currently works at Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, The Swiss Arts Council, as the programme manager for Southern Africa.

The production is directed by Amanda Bothma whose work has entertained East London audiences since her breakthrough production of Bobaas in die Boendoe at the Guild Theatre in 1990. Since then, critical acclaim continued to follow her, earning her a list of award-winning productions, including A Star is Born – The Rise and Fall of Judy Garland; Next!; Damsel in Distress; The Story of Eva Cassidy, and Vincent.

– Show on Saturday, April 15 starts at 19:30
– Show on Sunday, April 16 starts at 14:00 and again at 18:00
– Venue opens 90 minutes before the show for drinks
– Tickets are priced at R200
– A bar will be available – no alcohol may be brought onto the premises
