“It’s cholera waiting to happen,” says Essenwood resident

Cheryl Winn who has been living in Problem Mkhize Road since 2021, says that the massive sewage leak is a health crisis.

PROBLEM Mkhize Road resident Cheryl Winn says there has been a massive sewage leak in the road since early February, and residents of the road are tired of dealing with the filth right outside their properties.

“I first reported the issue to the municipality on February 8 and received acknowledgement of my complaint and a reference number,” said Winn. The Problem Mkhize Road resident says that even after reporting the issue numerous times since, the residents have received no help with the issue.

“It is like we are living in a state of squalor – we can’t open our windows and because it is right outside our driveways, the sewage tracks into our yards. My entire garage has a stench because my tyres drive through the sewage every time I come in and out of my property. The entire area smells awful, too,” said Winn.

Winn who has been living in Problem Mkhize Road since 2021, says that the massive sewage leak is a health crisis. “Not only does this affect us, but I also feel sorry for the people who drive and walk on this road. It’s disgusting! It’s cholera waiting to happen. There is toilet paper and sanitary pad material, and I have seen all sorts of things in the murky water.”

Winn says it has been five weeks since the issue was reported, and there has still been no help from the municipality.

The eThekwini Municipality was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
