The 27-year-old discovered his passion for art and design in Grade 10 and went on to study graphic design at the Durban University of Technology. During his time in university, Pillay found out about the Red Bull Doodle Art Competition, and his interest was piqued. “I found out about the Red Bull Doodle Art Competition when I was at DUT, studying graphic design. Red Bull visited my campus and was advertising the event. Everyone at campus insisted I enter the competition, and I did – only to find out that I won the regional competition and was a finalist, meaning that I would represent South Africa as a doodle artist in California, San Fransisco.”

Pillay describes the experience as surreal. “I met so many creatives that were doing great things then and who still are. The competition has changed my perspective in how I see ordinary daily life, the details around me and how to appreciate them.”
