Umbilo Community Policing Forum, Sector 3 to host elections this weekend

Anyone who lives within the Sector 3 area is eligible to vote – this includes the area south of Rick Turner Road and north of Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

UMBILO residents will have the opportunity to select a new chairperson for the Sector 3 community policing forum (CPF) following the present incumbent’s resignation earlier this year. This is one of two positions up for election – including the deputy secretary.

The election is scheduled to take place at the Umbilo Congregational Church on Cunningham Road on Saturday, February 11 at 11:00.

According to the Umbilo Community Policing Forum executive secretary, Jonathan Erasmus, the Umbilo SAPS precinct consists of three policing sectors, and each sector must have its own community policing forum.

“Each sector is responsible for managing and planning its own crime-awareness strategies and to build community relationships with the SAPS,” said Erasmus.

He said the sector CPFs are represented on an executive CPF where issues affecting the entire precinct are discussed.

He said Sector 3’s geographic footprint covers the area south of Rick Turner Road and north of Solomon Mahlangu Drive, west of South Coast Road, and east of Bellair Road (M10).

“Anyone who lives within this area is eligible for nomination to the sector committee and vote at the sector committee election. All participants must bring proof of address and a valid identity document,”  said Erasmus.

There are two positions up for election to the sector CPF, namely chairperson and deputy secretary.

Erasmus said that sector committees are a vital cog in the fight against crime as they provide real-time information on criminal incidents and public perception of the police, and are able to provide and implement relevant insights into crime-awareness strategies.

“The CPF works in partnership with the SAPS and provides key oversight on the station’s performance,” he said.

Voter and nomination registration will begin at 10:30 and close at 11:05.
