Sherwood Primary School turns 70
On February 3, learners and staff at Sherwood Primary School celebrated the local school's 70th birthday.
SHERWOOD Primary School commemorated 70 years of moulding young minds since the local school’s establishment in 1953. Dean Unger, principal of Sherwood Primary, hosted a special assembly on Friday, February 3 to celebrate the school’s 70th birthday. “All learners were encouraged to dress in school colours (green and white), and each learner was treated to a celebratory cupcake,” said Unger.
Mr Greg Connell, who is one of the longest-standing members of Sherwood Primary, attended the school from 1981–1987 as a student and then returned as a member of staff in 2004.
Connell commented on this milestone for the school. “I have seen many changes in the school, all to improve the quality of education for the multitude of learners that have passed through our gates. In 1990, Sherwood had the distinction of having the Duxs of Durban High School, George Campbell, and Berea Girls High School all being part of the same class in 1985. We had an Olympic athlete, a Durban July horse-racing winning jockey, hockey players, many learners representing South Africa at badminton, and a rugby world-cup team physiotherapist now working with the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) soccer team in France.”

In 1991, January 15, Sherwood Primary opened its doors to learners of all races. In five years, Sherwood Primary will be celebrating their golden jubilee, marking 75 years in education.
“Sherwood Primary aims to develop a holistic child, preparing them for the future. Like our motto states – ‘to be brave, strong and true and to fill the world with love our whole life through,’” said Unger.
