We ‘mayo’ not survive Hellmann’s discontinuation, but here’s a recipe to try
News spreads fast - more than 17 000 social media users commented as Hellmann's made the announcement that South African shelves would stock the product no more.
SOUTH African shoppers will struggle to find Hellmann’s Mayonnaise on local shelves as the products have been discontinued due to importation costs.
Hellmann’s Mayonaise took to their Facebook page to share the news.
“It’s hard to say goodbye to delicious Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, but due to high inflationary import costs, we will regretfully be discontinuing Hellmann’s in South Africa until further notice. A big thanks to our loyal fans for all the mayo love over the years,” read the post.
From the social media reaction, it’s safe to say that the news was not well received.

The post racked up more than 50 0000 shares and more than 8 400 reactions, with more than 17 000 comments flooding in.
“It’s not April yet. Hope you’re not serious,” wrote one social media user who was clearly hoping the announcement was a cruel April Fool’s joke.
“Thank you for all the memories and scrumptious meals I had with Hellmann’s Mayonaise,” wrote another.
Hellmann’s, an American brand, was established in 1913.

A recipe to try
We know it’s not the same, but here is a recipe to whizz up mayonnaise at home – it may help to soften the blow.
Ingredients:
- 1 egg
- 1 cup sunflower oil
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- a pinch of salt
Method
Place the egg, mustard, salt and lemon juice in a food processor and blend. Continue to blend on a low-medium setting while slowly pouring the oil into the blender until it becomes the consistency of mayonnaise.
