WATCH: Incredible lightning storm across Berea

Berea Mail captured a few clips of the amazing lightning display seen over the area yesterday.

A SPECTACULAR display of lightning was seen in the Berea area on Wednesday, December 14 following heavy thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natral.

Lightning was seen striking vertically and horizontally across the sky. Speaking to Berea Mail, Julius Mahlangu, a weather forecaster at the South African Weather Services explained the lightning patterns.

“With thunderstorms, we can see inter-cloud lightning which means lightning is striking from one cloud to another cloud.  Intra-cloud lighting occurs within a single cloud. Then we have cloud-to-ground lightning where lightning strikes the ground,” said Mahlangu.

“Cloud-to-ground lightning can be dangerous for people on the ground, while inter-cloud lightning can be dangerous to the aviation community,” he added.

“We had a number of thunderstorms from the interior of the province toward the coastal area yesterday which is why there was so much lightning in Durban,” explained Mahlangu.
