These crime trends are on the rise in Durban this festive period

As many community members collect their year-end stokvel money, police say robbery is a concern.

AS THOUSANDS of visitors flock to Durban for the festive period, Durban Central SAPS have highlighted several crime trends on the rise at this time of year.

“The police in Durban will be out in full force, showing extra visibility in Durban and surrounding areas in order to curb crime,” said Captain Muzi Maphumulo, spokesperson for Durban Central SAPS.

“We appeal to people to conduct bank transfers when sharing stokvel money. This issue is affecting many people. Some people have lost their lives when they were robbed of stokvel money,” said Maphumulo.

Another crime trend is ‘theft out of motor vehicles’ through remote jamming.

“The police have noted that people are still leaving valuables like laptops and jewellery inside their vehicles. It is advisable never to leave valuables in your vehicle,” said Maphumulo.

Maphumulo urged motorists to ensure valuables are hidden from sight if items must be left in a vehicle for some reason.

“Remote jamming is also used by criminals to jam the locking devices of vehicles. Motorists should test the door in order to ensure that it is locked,” added Maphumulo.

To report crime, call 10 111.
