Local group calls for feral cat feeders

IF you are a cat lover and happen to have some spare time on your hands, sign up to join a group of local cat feeders who operate in the Durban area, feeding four feral cat colonies on an ongoing basis. According to one of the local members, Erik Glaser, the group is very small, and they are urgently looking to expand.

“We urgently need support to expand our very small group of feeders, but it is essential that anyone who joins is able to guarantee their availability. We would love to have some new faces working with us, and any help will assist the cats a great deal.”

Glaser says that all four colonies are located in the Durban area. “Our colonies are in a 3km radius of each other and include cats at St Anthony’s Catholic Church, the Police/Ambulance parking lot near the Warwick Triangle, the Botanic Gardens, and a colony living opposite the Berea Centre.”

According to another group member, Lynn Goodman, all the cats are spayed or neutered.

“We follow the system of trap-neuter-return. It is a humane and effective approach for controlling stray and feral cats from over-population.

“The process involves live-trapping the cats, having them spayed or neutered, and if possible, vaccinated, then releasing them back into the outdoors.”

Glaser says there are a few simple requirements for volunteers. “Anyone who would like to join will need to have their own transport and ideally – but not necessarily – financial resources to cover the feeding costs for whichever colony they may be feeding.”
