Grade 10 learner appeals for donations to achieve his dream

With the help of donations, Msawakhe Makhanya will receive assistance from Glenwood High School teachers Scott Mantle and Peter Richards, to help him purchase the materials for his project.

GLENWOOD High School learner Mzwakhe Makhanya built a go-kart vehicle from scrap-metal materials in December 2021 and is hoping to build an upgraded go-kart by this December. He is appealing to people to help him achieve his goal.

“During my December school holidays in 2021, Mr Peter Richards let me use his workshop to build my first go-kart. Another teacher helped me collect scrap metal at school, which I used to make a chassis – which is the framework for the go-kart. I used an old lawnmower engine from Mr. Peter Richards. Building my first go-kart has made me dedicated to cars, and I really enjoy it. I enjoy building things with my hands. I spent my September 2022 school holidays doing work experience with R&B Motor Engineering in Pinetown. I learned a lot from everybody there. I learned to strip engines, measure crankshafts and rebuild engines of big trucks,” said Makhanya.

For his next project, the Grade 10 learner wants to build a cross-kart go-kart, which he says he will call a Spider Kart Buggy. Cross-kart or off-road kart racing is a type of kart racing that takes place on autocross, rallycross, dirt oval or ice racing tracks instead of on paved tracks.

“I have started my planning and drawings. I’m looking to raise R25 000 to help me pay for my project and the parts I will need. My last project made me realise my dream and that I can do lots with my hands. My dream is to be a Formula 1 mechanic one day, and building this kart will give me a prototype to show to engineering companies that I can hopefully intern with,” said Makhanya.

With the help of donations, Makhanya will receive assistance from Glenwood teachers Scott Mantle and Peter Richards, to help him purchase the materials for his project.

“I plan to build the Spider Kart Buggy during my December school holidays in Mr Peter Richards’ farm workshop. Any support would mean so much to me.”
