Local band brings the funk to Rhumbelow Theatre

Hawema's sound includes energetic rhythmic changes, in-your-face lyrics and heart-racing riffs, which are balanced against groovy dance sections and beautiful jazz chords.

THE fabulous, funky, four-piece outfit from Durban, Hawema, whose sound is an amalgamation of local hip-hop, house, rock ‘n roll, punk and jazz, will perform at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo for one performance only on Sunday, November 6 at 14:00.

Their sound includes energetic rhythmic changes, in-your-face lyrics and heart-racing riffs, balanced against groovy dance sections and beautiful jazz chords. Performances are electrifying and chaotic, powered by the DIY attitude championed by Durban’s punk scene in earlier decades. They have an EP recorded and are building momentum towards its release at the end of the year.

This concert is supported by Concerts SA through funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SAMRO. Concerts SA is administered by IKS Cultural Consulting.

The band consists of a group of musicians who are all veterans of the Durban scene. Nkosi e Mseleku AKA ‘Thoughts’ is the front man. He has been passionate about rap from an early age and was an integral member of the jazz-fusion outfit, Existing Consciousness, which played many an illustrious stage in KwaZulu-Natal.

Another former Existing Consciousness member, Mjabuleleni Nzuza AKA ‘Oudskul Omello’, known for his funky beats, is a producer, singer, DJ and drummer. Oudskul has played every style of music with every kind of musician on every stage from Splashy to Jameson’s Pub. He formed a part of the successful indie-rock outfit, Common Creatives, who also graced the Zakifo stage.

Tyler Durban is a monumental visual artist, regularly exhibiting around the province. He oversees band aesthetics, lion roars, and the low-frequency dark arts we call the bass, and is an expert in all things heavy and groovy. Tyler has played in punk bands such as Write Off and Six Love. Every band needs an absolute music nutter, and Hawema found theirs in Damien Roodt AKA ‘Damien Rude’, yet another former Common Creatives member. Damien has had a hand in the establishment of two events companies in Durban, Roots Up Entertainment, and Darker Dimensions. He also recently graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal with a degree in jazz composition, arranging and electro-acoustic music. He also DJs and produces.
