Knife-wielding suspect robs motorist at traffic light

The complainant was robbed while seated in her vehicle at the red traffic light.

A MOTORIST was robbed at knifepoint while stopped at a traffic light on Soldiers Way in Durban’s Central Business District on Sunday, October 30.

SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Zanele Khomo said police were flagged down after the incident at 17:30.

“Durban Central crime prevention members were conducting patrols in the Central Business District when they were flagged down by a complainant who was robbed of her cellphone at knifepoint. The complainant was robbed while seated in her vehicle at the red traffic light,” said Khomo.

According to Khomo, the suspect fled in the direction of the KwaMashu taxi rank where SAPS followed in hot pursuit. Police arrested the suspect in the taxi rank.

“The suspect was found in possession of an okapi knife and a cellphone, which was later identified positively by the complainant as her cellphone. The suspect, aged 38, was charged with robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon,” said Khomo.

The suspect is due to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s court on November 1.
