Netball Star, a true role model for girls

Former Proteas Netball star Precious Mthembu is destined to make a huge impact in sport. Determined to leave her mark, she lives to inspire and motivate young girls to be better than what they think they are.

AS a race ambassador for this year’s Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge, Precious Mthembu, who hails from Waterloo, is a true role model for girls and women from all walks of life. Her track record and incredible drive, combined with her goal to inspire young girls and women to be active and comfortable with themselves, reflects the legacy she wants to leave.

For Precious, life has always been about sport – something that has given her so many opportunities and opened so many doors for her to grow into the beautiful and brilliant teacher and sportswoman she is today.

With 97 national netball caps to her name, she is the founder of the Waterloo Gilbert Starlets Netball Team – a township sports initiative which aims to nurture young girls who are at risk, teach them life skills and encourage and remind them about the importance of education. She is also … wait for it … an isiZulu teacher and the 1st team netball coach at Danville Park Girls High School in Durban North. And this busy sportswoman is head coach of the UKZN Netball Team, the Kingdom Queens and the eThekwini U/19 team. She also coaches the U/18 national netball team and is assistant coach for the U/21 national netball team.

“What gets me up in the morning is the notion of doing something that I love every day. I am just so grateful to be part of a generation that gives opportunities through sport.”
