Knitting for babies

Beanies and Blankets for Babies shows new moms that they care.

A KNITTING group which calls itself, Beanies and Blankets for Babies, recently handed over a pile of items to moms at King Dinizulu Hospital in Sydenham.

“Our group is made up of seven hardcore knitters and others who help occasionally and we decided to knit items for new moms at the hospital. Two of us had birthdays in November and asked for wool instead of presents, and since October we have been donated wool or bought it to knit furiously! People are so generous, we have someone who said she would crochet squares together instead of knitting, and a friend in the UK has joined in, everyone is having fun doing it. We believe in knitting with enthusiasm, giving with love and letting go, and trust the items are going to people who need it,” said Snoeks Desmond.

She said a friend had taken a pile of items to northern KZN, as the focus is not only on the hospital.

“We can, however, never really meet the need as the turnover is every two days at the hospital, there are so many people in need. We went to one ward and gave to all the moms, it was so rewarding and it was nice for them to see that someone cares about their babies and thinks they are special,” said Snoeks.

Snoeks encourages the community to donate new wool or left over wool from their projects and even items they have knitted and want to donate. There will be buckets for donations at Berciles, Umhanga Rocks Drive, Busy Needles, Windermere Centre and One Stitch at a Time in Glenwood Centre.

“We had one person donate a bag of 31 beanies, and as we don’t know who it was, we want them to know how grateful we are!” said Snoeks.
