Law enforcement and community commended for vigil after national shutdown threat

Even though threats of a national shutdown fizzled out, police will remain on high alert throughout the weekend.

CHAIRPERSON of the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROJOINTS), Major General Phumelele Makoba, has commended all security forces and their partners for working around the clock to ensure stability in the province after threats of a national shutdown on Friday, June 10.

In the lead-up to Friday, messages widely shared on social media platforms had called for a national shutdown over the steep rise in fuel prices.

Police officers, as well as other security agencies, were deployed throughout the province to monitor the situation and prevent any protest action.

“I wish to thank police officers from all policing agencies, members of other government departments, security companies, businesses, community policing forums, taxi associations and all other establishments that rallied together to ensure that we will be able to combat any threat to the safety and security of citizens of this province.

“The community is reminded that while you do have a right to protest, it is a criminal offence to infringe on another’s freedom of movement. The public is once again urged to refrain from circulating messages that they receive without verifying the authenticity of the content, as this causes unnecessary panic in our communities,” Makoba said.

She added that police will remain on high alert throughout the weekend.
