Jogging Journalist: 10km done and dusted

After 14 weeks, the Jogging Journalist has reached the end of the road...for now.

Community news reporting calls for journalists to step into a community and hear its heartbeat, record the daily struggles and joys of the residents. To take things up a notch, Berea Mail journalist Danica Hansen has decided to take part in Stella Athletic Club’s Couch to 10km Challenge. Watch her journey unfold in the diary of The Jogging Journalist. Today, we bring you the 14th post in the series.

IT’S been 14 weeks since I dusted off my running shoes to take up Stella Athletic Club’s Couch to 10km Challenge – and what a road it’s been.

We’ve been through many ups and downs – literally – Glenwood is quite hilly. I have learnt how to run with technique, learnt the difference between a pronation and supination and how to tailor my diet to succeed on the track.

I have battled through blisters and backaches and done something I never thought I’d do- a 10km race!

Along the way, I met some amazing people and made friends in my community – thank you to Coach Dave Beattie, Stella Sports Club and everyone who walked, or rather ran, this journey with me.

Here is a little video I put together of the 10km race on Saturday, May 28.

I set off at 05:32, crossing the finish line at 06:51 – completing my first 10km run in 1 hour and 19 minutes – this amateur athlete is pretty chuffed as the diary of the Jogging Journalist is done and dusted!
