SAPS arrest illegal immigrant, recover firearm

The suspect fled as police approached.

A SUSPECT (32) fled from police on Bertha Mkhize Street (Victoria Street) in Durban’s Central Business District on Saturday, April 23.

After a foot chase, police arrested the suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of unlicensed ammunition and illegal immigration.

Durban Central SAPS spokesperson, Captain Muzi Maphumulo said Bertha Mkhize Street is a crime hotspot known for armed robberies. He said police were on foot patrol in the area when they spotted the suspect. As police approached, the suspect fled.

“Members pursued the suspect, hot on his heels, and apprehended him. Upon searching him they discovered a black browning 9mm firearm and live ammunition in his right jacket pocket. The man was identified as a foreign national with no documentation,” said Maphumulo.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Durban Central SAPS.  The suspect is expected expected to appear at Durban magistrates court soon.
