Glenwood residents unite to promote community safety

As a part of the Love Glenwood initiative, Glenwood residents have started a clean-up campaign called #ownyourverge to promote cleanliness and safety and security in the area.

THE Glenwood CPF in collaboration with Glenwood Community Watch (GCW) and the Glenwood community have kickstarted an initiative called #ownyourverge, that forms part of the safety and security campaign, Love Glenwood.

The area has recently become plagued by litter, illegal dumping and crime and the community of Glenwood is working to restore their once serene area.

Organiser for the event from Glenwood CPF, Douglas Mellish said the main aim is to create awareness, “We want to promote three things with this campaign; safety and security, cleaning up our local parks and our residential verges and to help change our community into a better one.”

Mellish said their work was just beginning, “We want to establish our community relationships. We are all from the community, it’s about the people. Why not come together to give back to the people of this community and make a real difference? We want community members to see real change when they step outside their homes and feel better because they did it themselves.”

Community member, Jason Steyn said if changes are not made soon the community could face permanent consequences, “We’ve got crime and rubbish being thrown everywhere and tons of illegal dumping. This causes a ripple effect, properties prices will start to drop and it will also bring down the reputation of the schools in the area. That means that residents will not get what they paid for to live in this area. If we can do something why not take it into our own hands?”

The campaign has received attention from not only community members, but also local businesses.

Mellish added that they were also helped by the Umbilo Business Forum (UBF), Blue Security and the eThekwini Fire Department.

The campaign organisers recently hosted a clean-up in Glenwood where community members pitched in to clean while firefighters gave an educational talk to the children in attendance.

According to Mellish, while the turn out for the event was impressive, they still have a lot more work to do.

“Our goal is to host a clean-up every term throughout the year at parks around the area. Part of the Love Glenwood initiative is organised clean-ups and the other part is promoting safety and awareness.”
