Beetge said there is widespread destruction and flooding across the area.

“The whole area is flooded. We have people trapped in houses and factories. There are unconfirmed reports that people have already passed away. There are reports of people trapped in trees. We are asking people to stay at home. We have rescue workers out there and have called on members of the public with lifesaving experience or rubber ducks to come and assist us. We are living a nightmare with very little sleep. There are also extensive power outages and repairs are delayed due to the road closures,” he said.
