‘Secure your car’, says SAPS

Police urge drivers to refrain from leaving valuables in their cars due to multiple incidents of car break-ins and out of car theft.

THE Durban Central SAPS have been receiving a number of theft reports about stolen valuables taken from the parked vehicles in Durban. These theft reports involve the burglary of laptops, cellphones, cameras, and other valuables.

According to Captain Muzi Maphumulo, the criminals are allegedly breaking into the vehicle window to access the vehicle or using remote jamming tactics.

“In one video report the criminal would slightly open up the other door of the earmarked vehicle when it is still getting to the parking bay or road,” said Maphumulo.

“We are appealing to motorists to observe their surroundings when they leave their vehicles. They must be alert to the thieves that could be around. The best advice is to always ensure that there are no valuables in the vehicle, which can attract potential criminals,” he said.

According to the police captain, it has been discovered that motorists are still leaving valuables like laptops in their vehicles.

“This kind of crime is not taking place in one area or spot. The crime of vehicle breaking is sporadic. Some of the vehicles are broken into while parked on the roads overnight or for short period,” he said.
