Umbilo neighborhood watch unites community

The community gathered at their local park to meet the new community watch.

NEIGHBOURHOOD watch group, Umbilo Warriors hosted a community bring-and-braai at Umbilo Park on Sunday, January 30.

This follows an awareness drive, hosted by the Umbilo Warriors last weekend, where members handed out flyers to the community outside an Umbilo supermarket.

Speaking to the Berea Mail, the chairperson for Umbilo Warriors, Craig Walker, said the community watch group was founded last year during the unrest and looting in KwaZulu-Natal.

“From there, a group of us stuck together and continued patrolling,” he said.

Walker said the service is free to the community, and the Umbilo Warriors rely on donations to run their security patrols.

“We are out there patrolling every single night,” he said.

Clinton Davidson, a member of Umbilo Warriors, said Sunday’s bring-and-braai was well attended.

“It was an amazing day. We had approximately 40 to 50 people at the event,” he said.

Davidson said the Umbilo Warriors plan to host another event soon.

“We have started to take back what belongs to the community for the community. This was the first time since I have lived in Umbilo that there has been an event for the community at the park,” he said.
