KZN SAPS arrest more than 2 000 suspects in a week

A total of 467 suspects were arrested for drug-related crimes.

POLICE in KwaZulu-Natal arrested 2 064 suspects for various crimes during weekly operations from January 17 to 24.

The KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said 43 suspects were arrested for murder, 24 for attempted murder, 20 for robberies, 53 for sexual assault and rape, 95 for theft and burglary, 223 for fraud and shoplifting, 423 for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, and 467 for drug-related crimes.

Mbele said police also seized 52 vehicles, some of which were stolen and some used in the commission of crime.

“The police also recovered 107 illegal firearms and 503 various rounds of ammunition. Large quantities of liquor and non-ferrous metal were also confiscated during the operations. The suspects appeared at various courts within the province, where some were remanded in custody and others were released on bail,” said Mbele.

Mbele said police will continuously strive to bring all criminals to book.

“Police officers in the province will continue to fight crime to the bitter end. This is confirmed by the positive outcome achieved in the last week during intelligence-driven operations around the province,” she said.
