Fumes from massive Durban fire reach Congela and Berea

Several areas, depending on wind direction, could be impacted by the fumes.

THE eThekwini Municipality has issued a health warning to residents in central Durban and surrounding areas, following a massive fire on Dr Pixley KaSame Street on Friday, January 21.

In a statement, issued by the eThekwini Municipality’s communications unit, the City said affected areas include central Durban, Berea, Musgrave, Congela, Glenwood, Wilson’s Wharf and Maydon Wharf.  Residents in these areas may be affected to varying degrees, depending on wind direction.

“The City’s Environmental Health Department cautions residents in central Durban and surrounding areas as fumes are emanating from China Emporium on Dr Pixley KaSame Street which, was gutted by fire,” said the City.

The public is urged to take precautions when in the area.

“Residents are advised to close their windows and doors and to put wet cloths over ventilators until the smoke clears. When it clears, residents are advised to air out their homes. It is estimated that the smoke may last for a few days. Officials will be on site until the situation is resolved,” said the City.
