Sunday sundowner series to dazzle Durban
The Sundowner series offers concerts every Sunday from January 16 until January 30.
MUSIC lovers are in for a treat as Durban’s BAT Centre plays host to the Sundowners concert series this January. There are shows coming up on January 16, 23 and 30. The series, which has been made possible by the SAMRO Foundation and Concerts SA, will be facilitated by Glenmore resident, Thulile Zama of N’den Entertainment.
Jaedon Daniel, a Durban pianist, will be joined by Riley Giandhari on drums, and Freeman Gumede on bass for the first concert of the series. This show will kick off on Sunday, January 16 at 14:00. Daniel, who leads the jazz and hip hop collective, the Blvck Crystals, is known for his unconventional piano style. His latest release is the EP, Poet’s Heart Killer. Doors open at 13:30. The maximum capacity for the show is 50 people.

Bass and vocal duo, Ariel and Juana will perform on Sunday, January 23 at 14:00. Ariel Zamosky is an Argentine bass player who completed his jazz studies at Tshwane University of Technology and went on to become an active member of the local jazz scene. Based in South Africa since 2005, Zamosky has performed and recorded with prominent musicians including Nduduzo Makhathini, Afrika Makhize, and Andile Yenana. He has toured extensively, both locally and internationally. Juana Pires Rafael is an Argentine vocalist and composer who has toured Southern Africa, collaborating with various artists.
Taking to the stage on Sunday, January 30 is Dumza Maswana, who will launch his third studio album, Celebrating African Song.

The album was produced by the award-winning jazz pianist, Andile Yenana. Joining Maswana is Andile Yenana on piano, Ayanda Sikade on drums, Jimmy Mgwandi on double bass, Sisonke Xonti on tenor saxophone and the co-producer Lwanda Gogwana on trumpet. Known for his soothing baritone voice, Maswana fuses tradition, spirituality, soul and jazz to create sonic experiences that uplift and inspire. He has shared the stage with some of South Africa’s most illustrious musicians, including Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Ringo Madlingozi, Tshepo Tshola, Sphokazi, the Jaziel Brothers, Mafikizolo, and the legendary Victor Ntoni. He has also opened for international musicians Kenny Lattimore and Chanté Moore. He has been featured in the works of award-winning DJ Mobi Dixon and DJ Palture. Dumza has also worked with Black Motion.
