Discover Durban with these walking tours in January

Take a trip down memory lane with these historical, guided tours.

IN the fast pace of modern life, there’s nothing better than slowing down and taking in the sights. With Durban Walking Tours, community members and tourists can do just that.

There are several tours coming up this month as there will be walks held in the Point area on January 14, 20 and 30 at 07:45, and another walk along Florida Road on January 15 at 08:30.

Ruth Hagen and Lynne Schwan, who run Durban Walking Tours, are both qualified guides.

Schwan described the Point area walk as ‘a refreshing walk around the Point, taking in the old and the new’.

Highlights along the tour include the old Point Prison, the Rope Shed, the Natal Harbour Board, the Dock House, Bamboo Square and the Point Fire Station, as well as a stop at NSRI, when available. Walkers can expect to see historical architecture along the way.

“The area is steeped in history,” said Schwan.

On the Florida Road tour, participants will take a ‘walk on the wild side’.

“We will walk on the path that the elephants took 170 years ago, when they walked to the marshlands in Greyville to drink water,” said Schwan.

The tour includes Mitchell Park, the Elephant House (when available), the Tramway House and Hollis House, with plenty of historical architecture to take in.

Durban Walking Tours offer several other tours, including the city tour and the most recent military tour. To book a tour, visit www.durbanwalkingtours.co.za or email info@durbanwalkingtours.co.za.
