Denis Hurley Centre shares its final tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Tutu's funeral sermon will be given by Michael Nuttall, the retired Bishop of KZN.

THE director of the Denis Hurley Centre, Raymond Perrier paid tribute to the late Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu for his anti-apartheid stance and service to the country.

Perrier said Tutu’s unflinching fight against Apartheid earned him the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize and the admiration of the world.

“In this mission, he described himself as ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’ like Ds Beyers Naude (of the Dutch Reformed Church) and our own Denis Hurley. The three men shared some interesting coincidences: they were all priests for more than 60 years, they all died in their 90th year, and they all were fearless in speaking out against injustice,” said Perrier.

“All three understood that to liberate South Africa meant not just to improve the situation of the black majority, but also to challenge the attitudes and presumptions of a comfortable white minority who also needed to be ‘liberated’ from the prejudices,” he said.

Tutu will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 1 2022 at his former parish, St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town.

“We offer our prayers of condolences to the Tutu family, and to Archbishop Thabo Makgoba and all our dear sisters and brothers in the Anglican Church,” he said.
