R130k worth of mandrax, heroin seized in Durban drug bust

The drugs were found when police stopped an e-hailing vehicle.

TWO suspects were arrested by local SAPS for the possession of mandrax and heroin worth R131 000. The suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, December 8 for the possession of drugs and for dealing in drugs.

According to SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, the suspects were arrested by the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit on December 7 at 19:30.

“Police members conducted a sting operation in the Durban Central area, where they received intelligence of drugs that were being transported,” said Mbele.

Police intercepted an e-hailing vehicle, with two occupants, in Gresham Place. Mbele said that 4 300 blue and white capsules of heroin; 4 000 empty capsules; seven large plastic packets of pure heroin, that weighed 100g each; and 20 ‘boss’ mandrax tablets; were seized from the suspects.

“The recovered drugs have an estimated street value of R131 000. The suspects, aged between 27 and 33, were arrested on the scene and charged for possession and dealing in drugs. Their vehicle was seized and taken to the pound for investigation,” said Mbele.
