Glenwood community unites under safety campaign

The Glenwood Community Watch is a non-profit organisation (NPO) and covers Rick Turner Road to Alan Paton Road, and from Umbilo Road to South Ridge Road.

THE inclement weather at the weekend did not deter the volunteers at this year’s Glenwood Community Watch (GCW) safety and security campaign.

Calvin Thomas, the SAPS liaison from the watch, said the aim of the event was to clean up the park in Kingsley Gardens, Glenwood.

“We have seen a lot of litter around the park area and we want people to come out and use these social spaces. We want to encourage communities to come out and use what they have and interact with the members along the way,” he said.

Thomas said the community and the watch aim to keep the space clean. He added they also wanted to create a safer environment for residents to gather and engage with one another.

“We invited members from the fire department and SAPS. We also had the support of Blue Security, which sponsored the event. We want the community to know that we are working together to serve and protect the community,” he said.

“I think safety and security starts from a very young age. We want to raise awareness, especially among the youth, on who to contact in the case of an emergency,” he said.

Going forward, Thomas said he hoped to strengthen ties with various security companies that serve the area.
