Shabalala races to victory

Shabalala encouraged other runners to get vaccinated before the country reaches the fourth wave of infections.

RUNNERS came out in their numbers for the first Hollywoodbets Durban Summer 10km held on Sunday, November 14 at Kings Park Athletics Stadium.

A whooping R15 000 for both men’s and women’s winners was up for grabs in the race, with organisers saying this made it one of the richest 10km events in the country.

Zinhle Shabalala from Ladysmith claimed top spot in a time of 34:38.

“It was a great day out and the weather meant running conditions were perfect. The event was well organised, which made it easier on the runners,” she said.

Shabalala, who is part of the Excel Running Club, said the Covid-19 pandemic didn’t destroy her training, despite the hard lockdowns and restrictions.

“At the time, running races were very scarce. I must say, since restrictions have eased, we’ve been able to enjoy more events, which has been a boost to most athletes,” she said.

The second winner, Cacisile Sosibo finished the race in a time of 34:53, and said she enjoyed the camaraderie and the vibe at the event.

“I would like to thank my coach and Excel Running Club and teammates for supporting me. I had a fever but I was able to push until I got to the finish line,” said Sosibo.

Chairperson of the Hollywoodbets Athletic Club, Greg Glossop said it was nice to see the Masabalala Yengwa Avenue route being used again.

“A huge thank you goes to all the runners and walkers who participated. This would not have been possible without Mdu Khumalo, the founder of Phantane Athletics Club, the hosting club of the event, for putting everything together. He did an exceptional job on short notice and made sure that we followed all the correct guidelines in line with Athletics South Africa,” he said.
