DUT launched 4IR centre of excellence

The state-of-the-art equipment installed in the high-tech laboratories for the Internet of Things and robotics is fully equipped to support postgraduate research in IoT, drone-based computing systems, robotics programming, and computing networks.

THE Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently launched a programme to upskill and re-skill postgraduates, in line with the government’s strategic plans for societal and industrial reforms.

The university partnered with the Media, Information, and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA).

MICT SETA’s chairperson, professor Oludayo Olugbara said the programme provides the funding required to establish and sustain a Centre of Excellence for the 4IR Postgraduate student training at DUT.

Olugbara, who is also an executive dean of the faculty of accounting and informatics at DUT, said, “The programme will resume with a cohort of 20 postgraduate students receiving bursaries to the value of R90 000 each. It is envisaged these students would go on to make a positive impact on society by shaping skills, pioneering industries, and empowering industries with their research findings,” Olugbara said.

Through the programme, a new lab has been built at DUT’s Ritson Campus Hotel Conference Centre School.

Sanele Doyisa, a DUT alumni, said he is excited about the opening of the new laboratory.

“This lab is going to help students in so many ways. I studied for a diploma in Information Technology and Applications Development for four years and now I can use this lab to upskill myself. It means I can come to the lab because we have the Internet of Things (IoT) and robots we can use to our advantage to build or create anything. I haven’t had a place to work for the last few months and this lab will help me design my idea,” he said.
