Motorists are urged to have their keys ready when they make their way towards their vehicle.

Speaking to the Berea Mail, the spokesperson for Berea SAPS, Captain Poobalan Naidoo said it is important for motorists to be vigilant at all times when they drive or park their vehicle.

“Avoid parking your car where there are no security officers guarding other cars. Make sure that all doors and windows are closed and locked when you park your car,” he said.

“Do not open your windows for hawkers along the road, or at the robots. Keep you car doors locked and the windows closed all times,” he said.

He urged motorists and their passengers to ensure that handbags, briefcases, cellphones, shopping bags, CDs, or any other valuables are not visible in the car.

Naidoo said that if a motorist was unsure as to whether or not an area is safe, they can contact a local police station for advice.

“Practice the same prevention skills you apply in parking lots or garages at your home. Never leave your keys in the ignition,” said Naidoo.

Remove a detachable radio, the radio’s face and CDs before exiting your vehicle. He urged motorists to install an alarm or an anti-theft device in their vehicle.

He said motorist need to remain vigilant when they exit their vehicle, or are walking towards it.

“If a stranger is standing near your car, or if somebody is watching or following you, go back to the office or shopping centre and ask for security to accompany you to your car,” he said.

He said motorists must have their keys in their hand when they approach their vehicle.

“Parking lots with a parking attendant, supervision or someone patrolling, are best. Otherwise, try to park in locations that are well lit and where many people walk past,” said Naidoo.
