Enjoy coffee, clothes and community at Glenwood market

Funds raised at the market will support the church outreach programmes.

THE Glenwood Presbyterian Church will host a market today, Saturday, November 6 from 08:00 to 14:00 to raise funds for its outreach programmes.

While the church usually hosts an annual fundraising fete, this year they will host a smaller market in line with Covid-19 regulations.

Vera Howard, a church elder and organiser of the market, said visitors to the event can expect to find a wide range of wares that includes pre-loved books, clothes and toys. There will also be food on sale, from pancakes to hamburgers and borewors rolls. Cool drinks will also be sold and a cafe, sporting a professional barista, will be available for coffee-lovers.

“We will also have the White Elephant that sells collectables. There are vinyl records on sale and we will also have crafts and preserves on sale,” said Howard.

Funds raised at the market will assist Operation Outreach, a church programme that includes several charitable initiatives.

“Our Operation Outreach supports anyone in our congregation and even outside our church. We pack about 30 food parcels a month and give set monthly donations to those in need. We also look after Khulekale Creche in KwaMashu as well as our church school, Stella Pre-Primary School,” said Shelley du Plessis, pastoral assistant and acting principal of Stella Pre-primary School.

“During the Covid-19 period, we gave out about 300 food parcels. We started the food parcel initiative in March 2020 when Covid-19 hit. We have actually packed food parcels solely with donations from our congregation and some outsiders as well. We haven’t had to use Operation Outreach money. We have used donations that came in to pack the food parcels,” she added.

The minister of the church, Dr Amon Kasambala said Operation Outreach was formed to address needs outside their church, over and above the needs of their congregation members.

“This was started by members of the church who felt the need to help others. During Covid-19 times, Operation Outreach funding has really helped, because some families inside and outside the church have lost their jobs and cannot afford necessities,” he said.

Kasambala said the market will adhere to all Covid-19 protocols.
