Umbilo draped in cultural cloths

The celebration was held at Kenneth Gardens and residents shared a meal and took part in cultural dances.

COLOURFUL cultural clothes were on display as Umbilo residents gathered to celebrate Heritage Day on Friday, September 24. The celebration was held at Kenneth Gardens and residents proudly shared a meal and took part in cultural dances.

“The event’s aim was to celebrate different cultures, seeking to achieve cultural cohesion,” said Pat Masiase, an Umbilo resident who attended and helped organise the event.

“We also launched the women’s arts and crafts programme, which will run over the next three months. We will be sharing skills on beadwork and crocheting. In the second phase we will focus on sewing and beadwork again. Beadwork is not something you can just learn overnight. It’s a process,” she added.
