Runners vie for R195k SPAR Grand Prix prize

Tadu Nare is in first place while South African runner, Fortunate Chidzivo is second on the ladder, with 84 points.

ETHIPOIAN runner, Tadu Nare retained first position in the 2021 SPAR Grand Prix series with an emphatic victory in Tshwane on Friday, September 24. As this is her fourth victory in the series, she also tightened her grip on the year-end prize of R195 000. 

The next race in the series takes place in Johannesburg on Sunday, October 3. 

South Africa’s Glenrose Xaba (Boxer), took second place in all of the races, expect the Cape Town edition that she missed due to a knee injury. She is currently in 5th place with 72 points.

Fortunate Chidzivo (Retail Capital) is second on the ladder, with 84 points, one ahead of Kesa Molotsane (Murray & Roberts). Chidzivo has come 5th, 4th, 5th and 6th, while Molotsane finished in 4th, 2nd, 10th and 5th place and  proved the value of consistency when earning SPAR Grand Prix points.

Former Comrades Marathon winner, Charne Bosman is in the lead in the 40 to 49 category as she won all four races. She is also 13th overall, with 47 points.

Elmarie Pretorius (Run/Walk for Life) leads the 50 to 59 category, with three wins and a second place. She is followed closely by Shani Silver of Boxer, with one win and three second place placings.

Judy Bird (Murray & Roberts) has won all of the races in the 60 to 69 category. Her nearest rival is her teammate, Karen Brough, who has three 2nd place placings and one 3rd place.

The joint leaders in the junior category are Leah Edward’s of Kearsney and Kira Ribbink of Murray & Roberts, with seven points each.

Murray & Roberts dominate the club competition with 494 points from 25 scorers. They are 100 points ahead of Nedbank. Boxer are in 3rd place with 248 points.

The first race in the series was held in August in Pietermaritzburg, followed by a race in Cape Town on Saturday, September 4 and a third race in Durban on Saturday, September 11.
