Massive factory fire impacts Glenmore residents

Glenmore resident, Deon Braun said the air quality in his area was impacted after the blaze.

GLENMORE residents say the air quality in their area has been impacted by a large factory fire in Jacobs, south of Durban. The massive blaze erupted on Balfour Road on Wednesday, August 25.

Advanced Life Support Paramedics responded to the scene just after 01:00. Spokesperson for  ALS Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson said, “Paramedics arrived on the scene together with the Durban Fire Department to find a factory well alight. The factory was burning quite quickly and spread to neighboring businesses. Multiple fire tenders and water carriers were dispatched to assist while paramedics stood by incase of any injury. The fire took hours to contain.”

“There have been no injuries reported in this horrific fire, however, there is  quite a lot of damage that has been caused,” added Jamieson.

Glenmore resident, Deon Braun said the the air quality in his area was impacted after the blaze.

“Durban has historically had poor air quality, and this winter was the worst I’ve experienced in 26 years of living here. The Cornubia toxic blaze is the obvious one, but daily, the air is filled with a cocktail of commercial and industrial chemicals, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2),” said Braun.

He said he had been monitoring Durban’s air quality on a weather website.

“Durban is only eclipsed by Gauteng for NO2 and PM2.5 (particulate matter like dust and fragments of burned plastic and wood/coal that’s 2.5 microns in diameter). These all contribute to health issues like asthma and the development of lung cancer in non-smokers,” he said.
