Wanted suspect arrested for attempted murder and robbery

According to Colonel Thembeka Mbele, the suspect robbed the victims of their cellphone at gunpoint before opening fire and wounding them.


A WANTED suspect was arrested after he shot and robbed two people in the Durban CBD.

According to police spokesman, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, Durban Central police officers acted on information received and arrested a 27-year-old suspect who went into hiding after shooting and robbing the victims.

“The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder, robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, ”she said.

According to reports, on Tuesday, August 17, at about 18:30, police were busy with operations when they received information about a suspect that was sought on two counts of attempted murder and robbery which was committed earlier this month.

“They proceeded to Albert Street where they apprehended the suspect. Upon searching the suspect, police recovered a pistol with seven rounds of ammunition. A cellphone which was taken during the robbery and attempted murder was also seized by police, ” she said.

Colonel Mbele said it is alleged that on August 7 at 11:30, two men, aged 27, were outside a Shisanyama outlet in the Durban CBD when they were accosted by an armed man.

“The suspect robbed the victims of their cellphone at gunpoint before opening fire and wounding them. The victim sustained a gunshot wound on the thigh and the second victim was shot on the lower abdomen. They were both taken to hospital for medical attention. Charges of attempted murder and robbery were opened for investigation,” said Mbele.

The investigation conducted by police led to the arrest of the suspect who will also be profiled to ascertain if he is legally permitted to be in the country and if he is linked to other serious cases.
