WATCH: Fire breaks out at Durban building

A video circulating on social media shows smoke billowing from the building.

A BUILDING on Joe Slovo Street (Field Street) in Durban caught alight on Tuesday, July 20 at at around 15:00.

Passerby, Graham Els said he had to drive along Margaret Mcandi Avenue to avoid Field Street.

“There was smoke everywhere. It was really bad.

“There was heavy traffic on Smith Street, Field Street and the Esplanade,” he said.

Spokesperson for the Durban Central SAPS, Capt Muzi Maphumulo confirmed that there was smoke emanating from the building. 

“Firefighters attended. There were no injuries reported when I was on the scene, although there were a few people entrapped in the building. There was no suspicion of foul play. We do not know what caused the fire,” he said. 

SAPS will be investigating further.
