Berea paddler determined to place at world champs

Smith said her goals in life is to be a sportswoman and travel the world.

BEREA resident, Tannah Smith (16) said she feels honoured to represent South Africa at the 2021 CF World Marathon Canoe Marathon Championships which takes place later this year in Pitesti in Romania.

“I started surfski paddling in the sea when I was 14 and enjoyed it. I only started flat water paddling when my uncle, who is a keen river paddler, suggested flat water paddling to improve my skills. I gave it a try and loved it. Since there was no school sport going on due to Covid, I’ve been able to put a lot of effort in,” she said.

Smith said her goals in life is to be a sportswoman and travel the world.

Recently competed at the South Africa Canoe Marathon Championships in Cape Town and won the Girls U16 K1 singles title. She also came second in the Girls U16 K2 doubles with her partner, Valma Jean Hockly.

When asked what keeps her motivated, she said she loves sports and competing. She is motivated to train as much as possible so that she can excel.

“It is difficult but I’ve learnt to be strict about my routines so neither of them suffer,” she said.

Apart from excelling in sport, Smith also fulfils her lifesaving duties, on a voluntary basis, on weekends.
