Step up for guide dogs

The national fundraiser challenges people to either take 100 000 steps or cycle 100km between Wednesday, 21 April and Wednesday, 28 April.

THE South African Guide-Dogs Association is challenging residents to ‘step up’ and join the Step up for Guide Dogs Challenge.

The national fundraiser challenges people to either take 100 000 steps or cycle 100km between Wednesday, 21 April and Wednesday, 28 April.

According to marketing manager for the association, Ané Roux, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect.

“Last year the lockdown forced us to stay home and stay safe and the Step Up for Guide-Dogs became a new fundraising platform in response to the devastating effect cancelled events had on the association’s fundraising plans. This year we are stepping up the challenge because the response was simply amazing and our supporters across the country has asked for it,” said Roux.

“Anyone of any age can enter. Simply set up your own GivenGain page, make SA Guide-Dogs your charity partner and get stepping or visit the SA Guide-Dogs webpage and follow the steps to sign up your own page. All the funds raised will go toward training puppies to become future working dogs. If you raise R750, you will also receive custom funky socks too,” Roux added.

One of the SA Guide-Dogs ambassadors, Daisy will be stepping this week and will be visiting all parts of Durban and walking routes to get her steps in, from Hillcrest to uMhlanga promenade.

“She will be posting her progress and encouraging Durbanites to get behind her in reaching 100 000 steps in seven days. The funds raised will go towards training of puppies to become future Guide-Dogss,” she said. To register or support the association, visit guidedog.org.za/event/.
