Durban police officer stabbed and killed on duty

It is alleged Sergeant Nduduzo Sibiya, who was stationed at Durban Harbour, was stabbed and killed after helping a woman who was being assaulted.

SAPS have confirmed that a Durban-based police officer was killed in the line of duty on Sunday, 11 April.

This after Hawks members from the Durban Serious Organised Crime unit arrested two suspects, aged 18 and 25, for murder.

They are expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today.

SAPS spokesperson, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the officer, who was stationed at Durban Harbour, was killed while responding to an incident in the Cornubia area in Verulam.

“It is alleged Sergeant Nduduzo Sibiya (36), who was stationed at ORS Durban Harbour, was stabbed and killed after helping a female who was being assaulted.”

“The suspects allegedly followed the sergeant and stabbed him before robbing him of his service pistol. He was taken to hospital for medical attention and he was declared dead on arrival. A case of murder was reported at Verulam police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members for further investigation,” said Mhlongo.

The suspects were arrested in Bergville.

“In the early hours of this morning members proceeded to Bergville where the two suspects were hiding. They were arrested and charged for murder as well as robbery,” said Mhlongo.

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Leseja Senona welcomed the arrest of the suspects.

“Our members will not rest until the firearm of the late member is found and removed from the wrong hands,” he said.
