Slain Glenwood man’s body repatriated from Mozambique

Adrian Nel was killed in the violent insurgent attacks in Mozambique last Friday.

A DAY before slain Glenwood resident, Adrian Nel would have celebrated his 41st birthday, his remains had been repatriated from Mozambique.

This was confirmed by Clayson Monyela, spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) on Wednesday.

Nel, a father and husband, was killed in the violent insurgent attacks in Mozambique last Friday.

The country, located in East Africa, has had a history of violence since 2017, however, Monyela said in a statement that the conflict had once again intensified, after a group of alleged terrorists stormed the coastal town of Palma in Northern Mozambique last week, where they targeted shops, banks and military barracks.

Nel, along with his father, Greg Knox (55) and brother, Wesley Nel (37), were among the dozens of foreign contractors working in Palma at the time.

It is believed the trio, along with around 200 other expatriates, took refuge in the Amarula Palma hotel after the town came under siege.

Nel was then tragically killed on Friday when insurgents ambushed their convoy at the hotel’s gates, according to reports.

The attacks have left dozens dead while hundreds are still believed to be missing, said Monyela.

He expressed gratitude to the Mozambican government for its assistance following the terrorist attacks.

Monyela assured citizens that the South African High Commission in Maputo would continue to render consular services to any South Africans in need of assistance.

So far 43 of the South Africans caught up in the attacks have been accounted for.
