Join harbour clean-up to commemorate Earth Hour on 27 March

Join student, Dr Refilwe Mofokeng as she hosts a programme dedicated to picking up plastic waste at the Durban Harbour.

IN observance of Earth Hour, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) student, Dr Refilwe Mofokeng is calling on Durbanites to join her as she hosts a programme dedicated to picking up plastic waste at the Durban Harbour on Saturday, 27 March, meeting at the Bat Centre, 45 Maritime Place, Esplanade from 9am.

Mofokeng, who is also the managing director of Refilwe Matlotlo, a non-profit organisation that supports sustainable resource management, said, “It is vital that everyone lend a hand to keep the waste out of our waters and away from vulnerable marine life.”

Each year, millions of people around the globe observe Earth Hour – a movement established by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to encourage the protection of earth and its natural resources. The movement is most popularly known for the symbolic act of switching off non-essential electric lighting.

The first 50 people to volunteer will make up the full clean-up team. In adherence with government regulations aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19, the organisers are unable to include a larger number of participants. All volunteers will be provided with sanitisers, masks, gloves, water and snacks.

The data of the waste collected will also form part of an international study that aims to quantify and mitigate plastics abundance in South Africa. Contact Dr Refilwe Mofokeng on refiloemofokeng@yahoo.com to get involved.
