UKZN suspends academic programme

Remote online registration for 2021 will continue for all returning students and first-entry undergraduates.

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has announced the suspension of its academic programme this week.

Commenting on the decision, Normah Zondo, executive director of corporate relations, said: “After thoughtful consideration of the ongoing dialogue between national government and the various bodies representing student formations in South Africa, we have decided to suspend the academic programme for the coming week, that is, from Monday 15 until Friday 19 March, both dates inclusive.”

She said remote online registration for 2021 will continue for all returning students and first-entry undergraduates.

“University management will inform staff and students on the dates for re-commencement of the semester,” said Zondo.

Meanwhile, The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) executive management committee (EMC) and the senate executive committee (Senex) convened a joint meeting to discuss matters related to student registration and the revised 2021 academic calendar, on Wednesday, 10 March.

The University is concerned about the lower-than-expected number of students registered so far.

While several returning students have successfully completed the online registration process, the registration numbers for first-time entry (FTEN) students are below the projected levels.

Due to the registration challenges, EMC and Senex approved the proposal to extend the current registration period by two weeks, to now end on Friday, 26 March and online lectures for annual and first semester programmes will commence on Monday, 29 March.
