Wanted hijacker finally arrested by Durban police

The man will be profiled to determine if he is linked to other serious crimes committed in the province.

A SUSPECT is expected to appear in a Durban court today, 16 February for being in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

According to Colonel Thembeka Mbele, from provincial SAPS, on 7 January police officers from the Ethekwini District Trio Task Team were tracking a hijacked vehicle, which they spotted on Siyanda Road in Cato Manor. Mbele said when the occupants of the vehicle realised that police were following them, they opened fire at the police officers. One suspect was arrested and was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition. An attempted murder case was opened at the Cato Manor police station for further investigation.

She said on Monday, 15 February, police officers from the Ethekwini District Trio Task Team received information that another suspect was seen around the Nsimbini area.

“While proceeding to where the suspect was seen, the police officers received a report of a hijacked vehicle in the Nsimbini area. The complainant was interviewed and further provided police with a full description of the suspect. The team worked tirelessly yesterday trying to locate the suspect and late last night, at about 11.20pm, the team proceeded to the Mbimyani informal settlement in Cato Manor where the suspect was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition and was immediately arrested,” she said.

She said the man will be profiled to determine if he is linked to other serious crimes committed in the province. The firearm will also be subjected to a ballistics examination.

Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thulani Gonya, applauded the team for their work. “We are pleased that the suspect has been arrested and will face the full might of the law,” he said.
