Support flower sellers, treat a loved one

Go along to Stellawood Cemetery to view a new mural and support Cottage Flowers this Valentine's weekend.

COTTAGE Flowers is encouraging the community to support the charitable cause by buying flowers for loved ones this Valentine’s weekend.

Cottage Flowers, formerly MOTH Flora, a fundraising initiative which has been in operation at Stellawood Cemetery selling flowers since 1965, will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 4pm, and people are invited to come through to buy flowers.

Speaking to Berea Mail, Shay Lester, chair of the group, said following lockdown level 4, the group were able to return to sell flowers at Stellawood Cemetery from June.

“We want to let people know we are still here and operating and we have introduced a new product, a table spray, which is something different, and has sold well so far,” said Shay.

With the group’s name change last year, they put out a call for an artist who would be willing to help spruce up the premises. They were wanting a mural painted and were aiming to improve the look of the space, including a wooden storage hut.
Young artist, Viyanka Luckrajh recently took on the project, and painted a bright, floral mural on the wall. Shay said the group had also painted the hut to improve its look.

Commenting on her involvement, Viyanka said: “People at my church knew about the project at Cottage Flowers and as they knew I drew and had taken art at school, they asked me if I would be interested in painting a mural there. I said I would be keen to do it and as the only instruction was to paint something with flowers, it was very nice and easy and I was able to do whatever I wanted.”

Viyanka, who won the art prize in Matric at Kloof High School, took two weeks in total to complete the mural.
“It was really hot in December, so I worked on the cooler days,” she said, adding that she was pleased with the finished product.
