Durban SAPS nab brazen cellphone thief

The suspect was detained at Durban Central SAPS and will appear in court soon.

DURBAN Central officers’ swift response led to the arrest of a robbery suspect and recovery of a stolen cellphone.

Sgt Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said on Wednesday morning, 13 January at around 8am, a man was at the intersection of Samore Machel (Aliwal) Street and Monty Naicker (Pine) Road in Durban CBD talking on his phone when somebody snatched it and fled.

“Durban Central officers who were patrolling around Aliwal Street were stopped by the victim who informed them about the theft of his cellphone which had taken place some minutes earlier. The police were given the description of the suspect’s clothing and took the complainant to drive around the Durban CBD looking for the man,” said Khomo.

The suspect was found walking along Masobiya Mdluli (Fisher) Street in Durban, and he was arrested by the police, said Khomo. 

The Huawei cellphone, which belonged to the complainant, was also recovered.

The suspect was detained at Durban Central SAPS for robbery and being in possession of suspected stolen property, she said. 

He is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s court soon.
