Celebrating the people behind the numbers

Shaun Tait, the Domino Foundation’s CEO, honoured his operations and programmes teams who are committed to investing and building communities.

A STEREOTYPICAL AGM could be summed up as “Death by Statistics” but The Domino Foundation’s annual feedback gathering of its members and partners is usually an event to look forward to.

However due to lockdown regulations it delayed the opportunity to host an ‘in person’ meeting earlier this year, which was further restricted to a members only event in respect of Covid compliance and to meet constitutional governance. Chairman of the foundation, Richard Mun-Gavin, commented in his opening address

“We debated the option of hosting an online meeting earlier in the year, but Domino is all about the human being and the celebration of the champions on the ground.”

Shaun Tait, Domino’s CEO, honoured his operations and programmes teams who are committed to investing and building communities through education, nutrition and social justice, which attracted investments of R11,054 million raised from over 200 donors and 10,000 in-kind items donated. Over the 12 months, 776 people voluntarily gave of their time and energy which equated to 6,718 man hours (or 840 full eight hour working days).

In his unfolding review of the previous year, he shared insights from their various programmes and reported on the additional two ‘safety net’ programmes namely Red Light Anti-Human-Trafficking and the Disaster Response Unit (DRU). Red Light made very significant strides in networking with other groups for increased resilience for their vulnerable beneficiaries, and in DRU saw their first international disaster really testing mettle when it was part of the humanitarian effort in the wake of Cyclone Idai in Beira. There was also local disaster support in the areas of tornadoes, fires and floods.

Commenting on an exceptional year, Shaun said: “We have grown significantly both within and without. Internally, we have strategically expanded our organisational capacity in our operational areas of volunteers and research and evaluation.”

Domino’s marketing storyteller, Karen Brokensha, added: “The Foundation is all about providing a stable of mercy ministries that bring dignity, justice and empowerment to our 13,599 beneficiaries. Last year made an impact in all three areas. That’s practical legacy-building in action.”

She invited the community as a whole, businesses, schools and other groups, as well as individuals and trusts, to become part of the Domino Effect.
“Let us encourage you to invest in something that inspires and fulfils you, be it the plight of abandoned children, supporting education at various stages, value of nutrition, skills development, vulnerable women or disaster response. Make a difference because an individual and community changed is ultimately how we will see our nation transformed for good.”
