VIDEO: Be on the lookout for Etios gang following Umbilo robbery

Umbilo SAPS will focus on increasing patrols in hotspot areas and will be paying attention to all unlicensed cars and cars without number plates.

UMBILO SAPS are warning residents to be aware of a gang, driving in a Toyota Etios, doing the rounds in the Umbilo area.

This comes after an armed robbery in Fleming Johnston Road, Umbilo on 8 December. A video doing the rounds on social media shows a car pulling up outside a house in the road. The driver is seen  getting out of the vehicle to help the passenger, a woman, to get out of the car. As they approach the gate, a Toyota Etios pulls up, parks in front of their vehicle and the occupants get out and hold up the couple.

According to Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS, the woman’s handbag and belongings and cellphones were stolen by the men, who then got into the vehicle and drove off.

“We suspect this is a new gang doing the rounds in the area. This is the first reported case since the arrest of the driver of another gang which was going around in an Etios, robbing people walking on the streets,” she said.

Makaula said Umbilo SAPS would focus on increasing patrols in hotspot areas and would be paying attention to all unlicensed cars and cars without number plates. “These vehicles will be stopped and the occupants searched,” she said.
